Today I picked up the Lee Valley Folding Shovel. Unlike other folding shovels available at local department and hardware stores this one is built very well and reminds me of ones I used in the military. The blade is a thick solid steel with an aluminum handle. It tightens up solid with a metal screw sleeve. Unfortunately Lee Valley says "stock is no longer available" but I got lucking and they still had some in stock. The price was very decent too at $21.50. This shovel folds up to the size of a hard cover book. This one will not bend while digging. If you are interested in getting one I would give them a call quickly to see if they still have any in stock.

Took my new folding shovel with me today and it worked quite well. Found it to be very sturdy.

I had one of them Digger but I snapped it which was a shame I suspect mine was a poor quality one I now use a ladies spade which is smaller than a normal spade and easier to carry about!

This one is pretty rugged - It looks very much like the ones we had in the military although it was made in China. The blade is a good thick plate, not the flimsy sheet steel you see in camping ones. I saw the little spades at the store the other day and considered one, but when I tried it for size I figured the folding shovel was about the same height. It's really nice to have when you bus to most of your dig sites I can manage anything about 30" in length in my duffle bag (also a remnant of my military time). The detector breaks down, the sand scoop breaks down, but I can't find a shovel that breaks down and I've hunted the net thoroughly.

Yes your right Digger when you haven't got transport you need things to pop in your bag, hopefully it will last longer than mine did.
