Hey Everyone. About ready to take the plunge and embark on this great hobby but have some questions.
1) I want to start with a good detector, not a bottom end entry level unit, but something that will stand up and keep it fun for a couple of years. Suggestions ??
2) Should I invest in a pinpointer ??
3) Are there organized outings or do folks here just meet up and map out locations to explore ??
4) I am in Ottawa. Are most of the good spots "tapped out" or still real interesting ??
Please forgive all the rookie questions and Thank you all in advance for your tips and suggestions.

1 - If you want a decent Detector get the Atpro, It has room to grow with you (stay away from Canadian tire is the best advice I can give you)
2 - Pinpointer is indispensable, good luck with out one, I would quit detecting if I did not have one (Either a Minelab Or Garrett, Everything else is garbage)
3 - There are some outing but I much prefer to meet someone somewhere without having a million other people detecting, I like maximizing my chances of finding good stuff.
4 - Most spots have been hit in Ottawa but only cherry picked, there is still plenty of signals and good targets left, I can attest to that.
I have been doing this a long time, I have a huge collection of found items, I swing ATpro And CTX 3030
Please for the love of all things good DON"T USE A LONG HANDLED SHOVEL IN PARKS, some will say its ok but it is definitely NO NO, a small hand trowel/shovel is all you need, keep it sharp and it will cut trough any soil and keep you from upsetting people thinking your excavating a park.....some don't understand this but this hobby is all about perception when out in public parks.
Happy Hunting Matt

I agree with Matt (except the shovel, he will change his mind when old age creeks and groans set in - lol). And if you do have a budget a Garrett Euro would be another decent detector but if you can afford the AT Pro that's the one to get. It has a normal level and pro level setting so you can grow with it.

Hi Jr, Welcome to Ottawa Digs. I swing a Bountyhunter Discovery 2200 it's from Canadian tire and has kept me digging for a couple of years now I'm plenty happy with it and find lots of stuff. I don't use a pin pointer I use a square of denim, I cut my plug and cut it in half one side or the other usually has what I'm looking for in it. I use the denim to spread out any soil I remove from my hole if the coin isn't in the plug. It works it's tidy and it's fast. It also doesn't cost $150.00 There are plenty of un tapped sites in Ottawa just do your research and knock on a few doors. Most of the interesting parks in town have been capped with soil in recent history because of industrial waste. Look for old buildings, big trees and places where things arnt any more. I like to dig road works and ally ways. I try and book a dig once or twice a month there will be a couple in August so keep your eyes peeled. Also just shoot me a note If you want to go out hunting. Hope that this helps. Happy hunting, Beth

Happy hunting, Beth Beth, on day when you spend the money on a pinpointer you will ask yourself why have I not gotten one sooner, my recovery times are less than 30secs a plug, BTW a gazette pinpointer will run you 119$ tax and shipped. Here is a video I made for my forum detailing the best way to cut a plug, these do not turn brown after a few days, I cut a horseshoe plug so that some of the root remind intact. Happy Hunting Matt

dont buy a detector because its all the rage get one that fits you and master it and for sure get the pinpointer its way more efficient and less hassle i use the makro pointer because its waterproof up to 3 feet i would have got the new garrett one waterproof to 10 feet but it wasnt out when i needed a replacement for my first one
