I have been hunting an old park and have a question about older coins.
I have noticed that at this park a coin that is about 10 years old can be found within the first couple inches. Coins from the late 70's and 80's can be found 3-4 inches down. It is then safe to say that older coins should be found below 4 inches. Why have I not found any?? I know my detector goes at least 7 inches deep because I have pulled garbage form this depth but have NEVER found a coin below 4 inches.
Tricks, tips??

did find a really nice heavy 10k gold ring today at the park. This is number 11 in the past 3 months. (1 10k gold, 1 24k gold+diamond, 3 silver, 4 costume rings, 2 child toy rings)

Hi Josh, I have read that most coins sit around 4" mark. Perhaps most have been detected already? Prior to the more recent deposits? I have wondered why I don't find more silver coins as well. In the past metal detecting has not been as popular as it is today but who knows? I personally find coins from ground level to about 8" down with a typical distance being 4" to 6" Anyone else have any ideas?

Here is a cell phone pic of the ring. I got really excited so I took a pic and sent it to the wife
It is hard to see but it is a little bit wider then my wedding band (as seen on my finger). I don't have a scale but it is really heavy.
I found it about 4 feet behind a goal post on a soccer field. Typically soccer fields have a busy side (closest to the parking lot) and a quiet side. This was found on the quiet side.... goes to show... hunt EVERYWHERE... (just not on the field itself... big no no in my opinion)

Has it ever been ploughed or something like that ? Just a thought! I highly doubt it. Wouldn't ploughing bring the older coins to the surface?

I went for a night hunt this evening to a new soccer field. I figured it is only a couple years old, and I could do a quick surface hunt... no digging. I was amazed to find a hand full of coins from the 60's to the 80's sitting right on the surface... above the grass. blew my mind.

Nice ring find Josh. You can get a scale on ebay pretty cheap. I bought mine at The Source for about $30 but similar ones on ebay for less (starting around $5 with shipping). I like to know how much gold or silver I found

Don't forget there was a huge boom in the 70's when affordable detectors first started coming out. I have some books from then. It was like detector paradise! Stuff everywhere! Also, I know a soccer field and park around here they just re-surfaced. They probably put around 10" of material including sod. If they did that around 20 years ago...
