There is an app called I-Detect. I installed it on my laptop - looks ok, problem with google maps though. I am playing with a project to track finds and related info. If I finish it, it should be able to store find data and allow queries based on target id, depth, etc... For instance a list of all finds for a given target id range listed from most to least find types. It's still in the concept stage so no pestering me It was pestering managers that drove me out of software lol.

Yes, I believe that has something to do with a Google Maps API that is no longer supported. It comes with a demo database, you should create a new database and ignore the error. You won't have the GPS link to google maps though. Last release date was in 2011 - so it is what it is. If anyone else knows of any, let us know.

Thanks, the map fix worked. Nice program but lacking the detail I want. The app I'm planning will record info like target ID which I think is critical for detectors that have the 0 to 100 / 200 display (etc) as well as depth, soil conditions, coil type, coil size and so on. I'm more concerned with being able to display summaries such as for this target ID what items are found (listed in ascending or descending order). Another example would be the same but instead of the item name could be the item material (steel, zinc, gold, silver, etc...) Also a summary of target ID ranges and the items found in ascending order. This would provide a nice search guide and help the user become more familiar with target identification (or likely identification) when searching. I guess my analytical background leads me in this direction I-detect is a nice program for recording finds though with limited reporting options. And the price is free - my favorite number

I've actually done no metal detecting yet, but here are the iPhone apps I have been using for exploration.
I used to use Cartographer for Google Maps "my maps" documentation, but it's no longer supported. Boo. Using Safari currently for "My Maps". Google Maps -- shows most park paths -- awesome; hopefully it will be updated later for "My Maps" Compass Camera (default) -- make sure location services is turned on. This will add a GPS coordinate for where the picture was taken. Then in Photos when you're back at home, you can browse places and find where on the map the photo was taken.
Cartographer was amazing. Via Google "My Maps", you could add photos and comments to pins, and have any number of pins on a map. If you find something similar, it would be worth looking at. Unfortunately, none of this is useful if you have no reception, but in the city, they've been great.
I looked at other iPhone apps, but I deleted most of them and mostly use those. Also, TomTom.
