Today I picked up the ultimate hand digging tool. The Hori Hori Knife at Lee Valley. This combination trowel and knife is quite sharp and comes with it's own leather sheath. The blade is curved in the middle like a trowel for moving dirt. You will want to wet and stretch the sheath by inserting something large into it so the blade does not cut into the leather as it's quite tight when new. They come in two varieties, a black steel and a stainless steel. I picked up the stainless steel one as it's a bit longer and has a graduated blade marking both inches and millimeters for depth. Considering the cost of some trowels on metal detector sites this thing is a bargain at $32.50 and should last a life time. The next time I encounter a root in the way - look out Some extra care will be needed when digging with this blade due to it's sharp edges.

Well I've had some experience using this trowel/knife now and I'm very impressed. This tool cuts through dirt like butter and I pity the poor root that gets in my way. The other day I encountered a root the size of my finger and with a few slices on the serrated side I was through it in seconds. I guess I forgot to post a picture last time so here is one.

I have one of those as well. Works great, and looks cool to boot! I just don't like the cheepo vinyl sheath...

Mine came with a leather sheath? I had to get it wet and stretch it out so the blade wouldn't cut it (very sharp serated edge).

I was thinking of getting the 12" Transplant Trowel from Lee Valley. I just want one that won't break!

Not familiar with that one. This one is about 8" total blade length and definately shouldn't break.
