Hi everyone ! Hi want to have your thouts on a responce from the city of ottawa I received today.
I ask if we can use a metal detector on city properties and parcs, here's their responce :
"Bonjour Bernard
Malheureusement, nous ne permettons pas l'utilisation des détecteurs de métal dans nos parcs et nos terrains.
Merci et bonne journée "
I will translate... "Unfortunately, we don't authorize the use of metal detectors in our parcs and city properties. Thankyou and good day."
So if we can't use our detectors on the NCC and city of Ottawa land what good is a detector in the region ?
Anyway, sorry for the bad english and I hope you will have good news for me.

Why would you ask the city to begin with? I detect in parks and on beaches and no one has ever said anything to me here in Ottawa. Why point a light on your self and others by getting all official with the city.

Not to worrie probably no harm done as the city has better things to worrie about. I detect all over the place on public property as long as I'm tidy and friendly people are usualy more intereted than anything. Some times people will ask if I'm allowed to be detecting where I am and I'll say oh yes absolutely Just be respectful of shared use land and don't leave holes. Once the snow melts lets go detecting together. Beth

I agree with Beth. Not one person has told me to get lost (yet)! # 1 rule.... just practice proper recover techniques thats all. A good idea is to study up on it, and also practice in your own backyard. Also just be aware where you choose to hunt. For example do not dig holes in an active sports field. If approached by an officer/bylaw just be honest and agreeable. Thats what i would do.

I inquired to the Mayor's Office and was passed on to the Manager of Parks and permission is given for city parks (not NCC) so long as you restore your hole to the condition you found the land in. I will post this letter soon publicly. In the past I sent it to each member upon request but have decided that I should just publish it so all can be aware of the permission. I will of course remove some info such as my email address but other than that it will be as received.

So just to make sure I understand this right, from this map www.ncc-ccn.gc.ca/sites/default/files/pubs/NCC-CCN-Map-Carte-Urban-Lands-Terrains-Urbains-2011.pdf NCC land is coloured dark green and purple, the other colours are for non NCC land. Looking at Mooneys bay the beach is white then there is a small strip of dark green (NCC land, of limits) and then yellow (recreational), so I can detect in the white and yellow areas ? I am new to this and waiting for snow to melt , does this group ever meet ? It would be great if some of us could meet one night before the season starts ! anyone interested ?

I'd be interested in a meet up do you drink beer? I'll be hitting the back ally ways to do a little detecting in the coming week in the Hinton burg area. They are often overlooked and hide shallow items. I've been lucky finding tokens in the allys.

Hey guys, I recently got into MDing a few weeks ago and would be very much down to meet up with anyone (or a group) of metal detectors. I'm a student here and don't have a metal detector myself just yet, but I don't see why I can't learn a thing or two from the pros out on the field

Hi Beth, yes I drink beer, so perhaps a pub for a pint sometime in the week after 8 works for me. Anyone else ?
