Gold doesn't oxidize so it's really just buffing to make it shine. I would suggest something like toothpaste. I clean silver using the tinfoil and baking soda method. I discussed this elsewhere on the forum but essentially you place the silver object on tinfoil in a non conductive container, cover it with baking soda and a pinch of salt. Boil some water and pour it over the soda. The silver oxidation (silver sulphate) will reverse oxidize leaving the silver intact and create aluminum sulphate. This will remove almost all of the oxidation of the silver, next I will rub it down with baking soda paste and/or toothpaste. If it is an old coin I stop short of polishing as this will damage the coins value for most collectors.

A great way to clean silver jewelry is a plain white eraser works great and dosnt damage
