Started detecting this summer and have accumulated a handful of coins and come old cool stuff. To all you die-hard detectorists out there... what do you do with what you collect.... I mean, you can't keep everything!? Do you cash in on the old coins and jewelry or keep it as a collection? How about the old do-dads you find.. horse shoes, square nails...? My loot Mason jars are filling up and I wonder if I'm keeping to much of it. I would love your thoughts...

Hello Dicro, It's up to yourself in what you want to keep. As far as the scrap iron/steel, copper, brass. I put it in 5 gal. pails and once the frost is in the ground at the end of the season I'm heading to the scrap yard and cashing in. Could you post some of your better finds so the rest of us can drool over them? LOL Thanks and Good Luck

Not much to show. Presently surveying the site of an abandoned village. I think I'm on the right spot as I'm finding loads of house material and foundations. I'm not collecting the treasures as most of it are modern scrap. Still waiting to add an old coin or jewelry to the stash... much work to do (which is fine by me).

Hey Dicro, I personally recycle all my finds that aren't jaw dropping. I keep only things that I would show off because the reality of it is I wouldn't look twice at most of my finds so why not recycle them? Metal detecting is a fun hobby and it is easy to get possessive over every find (for example I use to keep bottle caps) I think it is important to give up anything you wont look at again and hold it as a memory or story for others.
I currently keep:
Coins if they have a collectable value. The rest goes towards mcdonalds when I am hungry from all the detecting. Rings and such to prove to people I can find things haha... I will start melting it down when I get nicer pieces. Unique old items that you just cant buy anymore. Bullets/shells when they are intact and old.

I don't keep much. Modern coins eventually go with the rest of my change to the bank coin counting machine. Old junky stuff into the trash, jewelry I hold onto for a time when I can get the best $ for it. For me it's about the finding of things. If I were to find something old and unique that I liked I would probably hold on to it, but the rest I have no attachments to.
