Nice find. I think I found it on this pageB1349. Federal officer staff button, eagle with shield, "SMITH YOUNG. & CO / (dot) N. Y." dm, (14.7mm) Button was intended for officers, depicting patriotic symbolism of eagle grasping arrows for war and olive branch for peace. This die pattern features eagle facing right surrounded by 19 stars, stripes only in shield with concave top and pointed bottom, three arrows in right talon. Backmark: "SMITH YOUNG. & CO / (dot) N. Y." dm, inner ring of dots, ca 1840's, only used for small size buttons, (Young27small). Three part officer button, hat or sleeve size. Dug button with gilding. Recovered: Manassas,Virginia. If that's not it - it's close.
