I use a shovel with a blade about half the size of a normal construction spade. I always go in (on soft soil) as far as the blade will go, cutting a U shaped hole the width of the blade on each side. I then insert my shovel into the bottom of the U cut and lift the dirt plug leaving the top of the U connected as a trap door. Then I check the plug and the hole to see where the target is located and my hand held pinpointer after that to quickly locate the target. When finished just fold the plug back on it's hinge and you would never know I was there. If you leave no signs then people don't have much to complain about.

Guy makes a good point about cutting in on a shallow angle...makes sense!

Yes, I've gone back and checked a hole or two and the ones that you cut down straight vice on a V shaped angle don't have tell tale signs of digging.
