Non Destructive Recovery Techniques
Don't be afraid to dig your targets with the tool that makes sense and does the best job. If you are in a public place people will see you digging regardless of whether you are using a hand trowel, a coin popper, a small or large shovel. The important thing is to leave the site the way you found it. Then if someone complains they're complaint can't be justified. I have used a full length shovel with a narrower blade in my neighborhood all season and although I've had many inquiries as to what I found and a couple of what was I doing. When I take the time to explain the hobby and show them how I recover a target (everyone watches with excited anticipation) and show them how carefully I restore the ground to it's previous condition I have never had a complaint or even a grumble. I've had people pull their wedding rings off and toss them on the ground asking me to check it If we are going to build a good public image for this hobby, attempting to hide what you are doing is not going to accomplish it. Be bold and brave, go forth and dig properly and be a good ambassador for the hobby. Use the tool you best feel comfortable with and try to leave everything as you found it. This has been my experience and thus my advice. Complainers will complain regardless of what you do. I won't let fear govern my actions.
P.S. While chatting with a couple of slender ladies in the park once I looked at them both very seriously and stated that they should both lose weight! The shocked look on their faces was hilarious. Then with a grin from ear to ear I continued - but only on your ring fingers! We all had a good laugh. This was after I explained the hobby and the ice was broken
