Hi all, I would like to start this thread about what first prompted you to get into metal detecting? I think hearing everyones story would be fun. I will start with mine. I was in the second year of my new career as a long haul semi tractor trailer driver. My days were filled with driving 8 to 13 hours a day all over the North American continent. One of my buddies who was a driver started talking about his one day as we were waiting for our next load. Well when you drive all day you have a lot of time to think about anything that interests you. The next time I was back at my home base off I went to The Source to see what they had. The salesman had no problem talking me into the most expensive unit they had and in all honesty he was right as the Discovery 3300 has a nice feature set and still does me well to this day. Unfortunately I forgot one thing - driving 70 hours a week, when would I have time to detect? LOL. A few years later I imbarked on yet another career in security and now I have as many days off a week as I have on (working 12 hour days) and the hobby finally found time to flourish

Used to play around with an old Radio Shack Micronta 3001 back in the 80's and enjoyed it allot. Knew I was going to retire in 2013 so last fall I bought myself a Delta 4000. Only been using it for the last 2 months and not nearly as often as I want to but I'm getting there!

My brother used to collect coins when we were young and he got a metal detector for his birthday back in the 70's. Anyway one day we took it to the gardens of an old house near us, it was open to the public while my mum and dad were sunbathing me and my brother went off digging. About ten mins in he hit a signal and started to dig about 5" down we saw a cylindrical object with a Red Cross on it so we carried on digging (and hitting it with the spade saying what is it ). When we finally dug it up I was a German WW2 air dropped bomb, a bit like this photo below, it was about 12" long with fins on one end and a point on the other. They used to drop them in mass on a target and the gardens we were at used to be an armoury during the war so the Germans were trying to hit it ! My mum said throw it in the pond (lol) but we didn't we took it to the police and I have never seen a room empty as quick they s@@t themselves haha And just to think we were hitting it with our spade Ever since that day I was hooked it was exciting stuff when I was a kid.
