Hi all, as we have a lot of guests visiting the board I thought I'd offer them the opportunity to get a word in. If this board is abused it will be removed. Feel free to ask questions about membership and post interesting links, etc...
NOTE* You will be prompted for a code word and likely a commercial video will pop up - just play the video for a few seconds and the code word will show up shortly after. You can then enter the code and click continue/ok... and the video will end. It's just an anti spam check.

Good afternoon,
I am an avid outdoors man and I am currently looking to get into the world of metal detecting. After reading what seems to be hundreds of articles on the subject from coin shooting to prospecting, I now need some guidance on the legal aspect of this hobby. What I am looking for is information on issues relating to finds and ownership...
I know that for private property you need permission from the land owner [LO] (written is always best), but what happens if you find something? Are you supposed to negotiate this with the LO prior to searching, is there precedence in current law?
What about crown land? Do you have to apply for a "Claim" before you can prospect?
I know it might be overkill but I like to dot my Is and cross my Ts before I do anything and since I am in Ottawa and I found this forum, I though who better than to guide me than fellow Ottawa enthusiasts.
Thanks in advance.
Wabbit.

Hi Wabbit, if you really want to dot your I's then I believe there are some local laws regarding lost and found, turning stuff into police for 30 days, etc... As far as private land that would be between you and the property owner. Some would be fine with you keeping anything you found, some would want a piece of the finds or the whole thing. For the most point people in the hobby just keep what they find and mostly that is lost jewelry and coins as well as old relics. My motto is finders keepers unless I am hunting for something I know someone has lost. Until you find the huge treasure I wouldn't lose much sleep over it Digger D

Hi, my father in law is an avid metal detector. He is visiting from New Zealand for 3 weeks and I am trying to find some things for him to do while he is here. Anyone know of groups or looking for a partner to take out for a day? We are located just outside Lanark Village but he will have access to a car to travel around. Thanks for your help. You can respond to aliaoffman@hotmail.com.

Hello everyone, I lost all my keys yesterday in a snowbank outside my house. I live in Kanata and I am willing to contract someone for a quick find. If you have a metal detector and you're interested please call me at 613-262-0169. Thank you and have a nice day.
