Tough call if it's a rare or collectable relic etc. If you take the rust off by scrubbing it, you might damage it further. If you don't, it's hard to evaluate the piece...catch 22. I have an Ultra Sonic jewelry cleaner that I use to clean bullet casings for reloading and it does a good job on coins etc but it won't take all the rust off.

Hi msshell82 I think personally it depends on what the item is really? But as kalpoon say's you probably need to get the rust off to identify it. Have you any ideas what it could be?

If you have a picture of the item, post it here. Someone on the forum might have an idea.

Hi all! Thanks for your replies! I have no idea what it could be, one half is near perfect, the flipside is very badly rusted... How do I post a picture? I would love some input!

Think I figured it out! Need to be in desktop mode for idea of size, I'd say it's a little smaller than the bottom of a coke can. Found where a church used to stand, at least a foot and a half down....thoughts?

Bad side is probably the back, looks rounded at the edge. From the dimensions you gave, I might rule out a button.

It could be a drawer handle or something similar. I wouldn't bother removing the rust. There is an electrolysis method to reverse rust but most use it to restore old tools and such. Most relics, etc.. are best left alone after a decent none abrassive cleaning.

Thanks! So you would classify this as a relic? (Sorry, I'm new to detectoring)
